Roof Detail

A new single family residence with detached guest house, placed to create a courtyard  with views of the White Mountains and the Volcanic Tablelands.  The client had two main goals; one, to have many indoor/outdoor spaces for reading,  hanging hammocks, and enjoying the outdoors; two, to have an entirely  fire hardened exterior with low maintenance.

A detached guest house was included for aided living if necessary as the clients age.  The garage is on the back of the house to hide the door view as well as to aid in protecting the courtyard from the NW prevailing winds.

The existing home was an historic cabin with a number of bricka-brack rooms added onto the main structure through the decades. Having lived in somewhat of a maze for years, the client had a clear desire for creating a more thoughtful, efficient layout for the new home, with cozy, comfortable spaces for living.  Clear connections to the rear yard for entertaining and taking advantage of views of the nearby Sierra Nevada were also a priority. 

Demolition of multiple old additions cleared the way for a new master bedroom and guest room addition including two bathrooms, an office and a new laundry room.   The existing living room, dining room and kitchen spaces at the front of the house were gutted to create an open layout for the same uses. 

During construction opportunities arose to vault the living and master bedroom ceilings for a loftier sense of space in each room.

Ellis ADU - Living Room / Kitchen

The ADU was envisioned as an efficient but comfortable and cozy space for a parent entering the golden years of her life. Portland building code for ADU dictates the ADU must be in the same style as the existing home, a two story craftsman, but no larger than 800sf.  We created a large, modern living/kitchen open space with vaulted ceilings and skylights to brighten the area in contrast to an adjacent, more intimate entry and dining area.  The bedroom and bathroom are distinct spaces with all ADA compliant fixtures and zero-barrier shower.
